Why branded short links get more clicks
What a custom domain changes about trust and click-through, and how to set one up in a few minutes.
A short link on a generic domain asks people to trust a destination they cannot see. A short link on your own domain tells them exactly whose link it is before they tap.

Same link, very different signal.
Why it affects click-through
People have been trained to be careful. Generic short links are used by everyone, including scammers, so a cautious audience treats an unfamiliar shortener domain as a small risk.
Your own domain removes the ambiguity. If someone already knows your brand, the link inherits that recognition. If they do not, it at least looks like a company rather than a redirect service.
The effect is largest where trust is thin: cold email, SMS, print, and anywhere your audience has not opted in.
It also protects you
Branded links create a subtle lock-in that works in your favour. Once go.yourbrand.com/promo is printed on packaging, that address is yours. You are not dependent on someone else's domain surviving.
The flip side is a responsibility: if you ever let that domain lapse, every link on it breaks. Keep it on auto-renew and treat it as infrastructure.
Use a subdomain
Connect something like go.yourbrand.com, link.yourbrand.com, or l.yourbrand.com.
Do not point your root domain at a shortener. Your root is where your website lives, and redirecting it would take your site offline.
Short subdomains keep links tidy. go and l are common for good reason.
How setup works
The mechanics are the same everywhere:
- Add the subdomain in your link tool
- Create one DNS record at your registrar, usually a
CNAMEpointing your subdomain at the service - Wait for DNS to propagate, normally minutes
- Verify, and the service issues an HTTPS certificate
After that, links you create can be served from your domain, while the service still handles the redirect, tracking, and QR codes.
One thing worth checking
Ask whether your links are scoped to your account on your domain.
If a service lets anyone's short code resolve on your custom domain, someone could share go.yourbrand.com/abc123 pointing at anything they like, and it would look like you published it. Snipvio restricts a connected domain to links from the owning account for exactly this reason.
Is it worth paying for?
If you send links to people who do not already know you, yes. If you share links mainly with an existing audience who trust you regardless, the effect is smaller.
The clearest case is print and packaging: a branded domain on a physical product looks deliberate, while a random shortener looks like an afterthought.
Snipvio Pro includes a custom domain at $14.99 a month.
